California DROP: one request to every registered data broker
Last checked October 14, 2026
The Delete Request and Opt-out Platform run by the California Privacy Protection Agency. California residents can send one deletion request to every registered data broker at once, for free.

How it works
- Confirm you're a California resident through the California Identity Gateway (or Login.gov if you already have an account).
- Create a profile. You choose how much information to give.
- Submit the request. It goes to over 600 registered data brokers.
What it won't do
- California residents only. You can also file for another California resident, such as a parent for a child.
- Brokers had to start processing requests on August 1, 2026, and must check DROP at least once every 45 days. It can take up to 90 days before your status updates.
- It only reaches brokers on California's registry, so it doesn't replace opting out of the big people-search sites directly.
So if you live in California, file a DROP request today and still go through the big people-search sites one by one. The DROP request covers the long tail you'd never find yourself. The direct opt-outs get the most visible listings down within days instead of months.
